Solution Focused Job Fair Support
Job Fair Support β Volunteer Quick Guide
First of all β thank you. This is only a guide. π
π Step 1 β Welcome & Scale
Welcome them warmly β then ask:
Q1: “On a scale of 1β10, how are you feeling right now? 1 being the worst you’ve felt recently, 10 being the happiest.”
π‘ It’s their perception of a 1. Don’t react to the number β just hear it.
Q2: “Take a deep breath in through your noseβ¦ and slowly breathe out. What do you think you could do to climb up that scale one notch and begin to do what you came here to do?”

π Step 2 β What to Do Next
| They say⦠| You do⦠|
|---|---|
| π° Nervous / anxious / scared | β Offer to take them to Darren |
| “I don’t know” / blank / “nothing really” | π Friendly chat β then offer Darren |
| “I don’t want to be here” / resentful | π¬ Reframe & encourage β see Step 3 |
| Distressed / confused / in crisis | π Stay with them. Get Darren now. |
| Q1 score 1 or 2 + distressed / disconnected | π “shall we go somewhere quieter” and find Darren (has the key to the sensory room) |
π¬ Step 3 β Calm Support & Reframe
For everyone β warm, calm conversation:
“The employers here are genuinely here to help and guide you β not to judge you.”
“What kind of work are you interested in?”
“Would you like to speak to Darren? He’s here today to help with any fears, anxieties or nerves β no pressure at all.”
π If they say “I don’t want to be here” β use this reframe:
“I hear you. But here’s what I want you to know β you made it here. That took something. And what’s through that door? It’s a room full of real people who could genuinely change the direction of your life. You don’t have to do anything you don’t want to. But you’re already further than you think β and that matters.”
π‘ Then pause. Let it land. Don’t rush to fill the silence.
π£ If they’re open: offer to walk the room with them, or bring them to Darren.
π€ If score is over 3 and they’re willing: bring them to Darren directly.

π‘ Your role: Smile, listen, be warm β then support or bring them to Darren. You don’t need to fix anything. Sometimes the most powerful thing you can say is “you made it here.” π
